Handmade using earth, water, air, fire, and soul these ceramic cups are our first collaboration with Filipino pottery studio Little Bruns. Sparked by conversations over early morning sisig about home, community and culture we found gentle kin in ceramicist Bien and his partner Erick. Bien and Melo created a timely connection in learning that they dedicate a lot of their work to their late mothers, named Angeles and Angelita respectively.
Each cup represents a different element of where we come from and in turn what we draw strength from - our love for our mamas and a deep respect for the work we are able to do because of them. We humbly call this ‘The Angels’ Collaboration and we hope you enjoy and love them as much as we do.
1. Tubig at Langit | Water & Sky $45
When we cast our eyes to the sea from the islands we see water and sky, life and dreams. Made using white stoneware and blue glaze applied using different techniques, the clear glaze leaves the surface glossy with intentional crackling lines holding stories of the handmade process.
2. Ninuno | Ancestors $45
Each Ninuno Cup’s unique grainy texture and stunning colour holds a warmth, like the beautiful brown skin of our family here and far. Holding the Ninuno reminds us to take the time to remember our loved ones and give thanks for our time with them. Using Bien’s favourite clay body to use on his potter’s wheel and crafted with terracotta glaze, the Ninuno is perfect for moments of connection with hot cacao or coffee.
3. Lupa | Land $50
The black clay Lupa Cup is a return to the earth and soil, a gentle reminder of the cycle of life. The Lupa Cup is fine textured and grounding piece in which Bien has retained the distinctive natural characteristics of the black clay. By firing the clear glaze for longer than usual at a much lower temperature, he was able to create a stunning contrast between the textured unglazed bottom with a gloss cacao brown upper and inner.
